Detailed State Tables
General State Tables
County Tables

All data are from the U.S. 1990 Census. The Detailed State Tables are from Summary Tape File (STF) 4, and the General State and County Tables are from STFs 1 and 3. STFs 3 and 4 contain sample data weighted to represent the total population.
The following definitions apply to both the Detailed State Tables and the General Tables. The definitions, except for Greater Minnesota and Metro Minnesota are from the technical documentation for STFs 3 and 4 prepared by the Bureau of the Census. 

Definitions
Age 
The age classification is the age of the person as of April 1, 1990. 

Child 
A son or daughter by birth or adoption or a stepchild of the householder. 

Civilian Labor Force 
Persons classified as employed or unemployed. (See employment status.) 

Educational Attainment
 
Data are tabulated for persons 15 years old and over. Persons are classified according to the highest level of school completed or highest degree received. 

Employment Status 
Employed: Civilians 16 years old and over who were either "at work" or were "with a job but not at work" during week preceding the completion of the census form. 
Unemployed: Civilians 16 years old and over who were neither "at work" nor "with a job but not at work," who were looking for work during the last 4 weeks, and who were available to accept a job. 

Family
 
A family consists of a householder and one or more other persons living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage or adoption. A family may or may not have children. Families are classified by type: Married-Couple (MC) Family, a family in which the householder and his or her spouse are counted as members of the same household; Male Householder (Male-Headed or MH Family), a family with a male householder and no spouse of the householder present; and Female Householder (Female-Headed or FH Family), a family with a female householder and no spouse of the householder present. 

Full-Time, Year-Round Workers 
All persons 16 years old and over who usually worked 35 hours or more per week for 50 to 52 weeks in 1989. 

Greater Minnesota
 
For the General County Tables, Greater Minnesota includes the eighty counties outside the seven-county metropolitan area. For the Detailed State Tables, Greater Minnesota includes the seventy-seven counties outside the ten-county metropolitan area. 

Household
 
A household includes all persons who occupy a housing unit. Households are classified by type according to the sex of the householder and the presence of relatives. 
Family Household: A household including a family. It may also include nonrelatives living with the family. Non-Family Household: A household consisting of a person living alone or of a person living with other unrelated relatives. 

Income 
Income is the sum of the amounts of: wage or salary income; net self-employment income; interest, dividend or net rental or royalty income; Social Security or railroad retirement income; public assistance or welfare income; retirement or disability income; and all other income. 

Labor Force 
All persons classified in the civilian labor force plus members of the U.S. Armed Forces. (See Civilian Labor Force.) 

Marital Status
 
Data on marital status were tabulated only for persons 15 years old and over. Categories include the following: Never Married, persons who have never been married, including persons whose only marriage was annulled; Ever Married, persons married at the time of the census, including those separated, widowed, or divorced; Married, persons whose current marriage has not ended through widowhood, divorce, or legal separation; Separated, persons legally separated or otherwise absent from their spouse because of marital discord; Widowed, widows and widowers who have not remarried; and Divorced, persons who are legally divorced and who have not remarried. 

Metro Minnesota 
For the General Tables, Metro Minnesota includes the seven counties in the Twin Cities area: Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington. For the Detailed Tables, Metro Minnesota includes the ten counties in the Twin Cities area: Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott, Washington, and Wright. 

Poverty Status (see table) 
Families and persons are classified as below the poverty level by comparing their total 1989 income to a federal government definition which is calculated according to family size, number of children, and age of family householder or individual.

Race and Hispanic Origin 
The data for race represent self-classification. The Census uses the following classifications: White; Black; American Indian; Eskimo or Aleut; Asian or Pacific Islander; and Other (which includes all other persons not included in the categories listed). Persons of Hispanic Origin may be of any race. 

Veteran Status 
Persons 16 years and older who served at some time in the Armed Forces. National Guard and Reserves are not included unless they had been on active duty. 

Work Disability Status 
Persons where identified as having a work disability if they had a health condition that had lasted for 6 or more months and which limited the kind or amount of work they could do at a job or business. 

Source of Data 
Summary Tape Files (STFs) 1 and 2 contain 100 percent data (vs. a sample). STF 3 and STF 4 contain sample data. Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files contain 5 percent and 1 percent samples. The Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) file also contains 5 percent and 1 percent samples.
